Company develops low cost load cell, which leads to entry into digital bathroom scale market; leading provider to OEMs and retailers. IPO on AMEX in 1988.
Company embarks on series of acquisitions designed to increase size/breadth of sensor division; acquires piezo film group from AMP, ICSensors from P+E, Schaevitz Sensors from TRW

The ICSensors brand brings knowledge and expertise in the areas of design and manufacturing of micromachine silicon pressure sensors, accelerometers and microstructures. A world recognized pioneer in microsensor technology, ICSensors serves industrial, medical and aerospace customers. | |
Schaevitz Sensors was acquired by Measurement Specialties in August 2000 from TRW Industries. Schaevitz is a widely recognized and respected sensor brand name with over 60 years of design, manufacturing and expertise for low to medium volume, rugged industrial sensors using strain gage, linear differential transformers (LVDT), reluctive displacement, tilt, fluid level, pressure and many other lines of sensor-based products. | |
Elekon Industries USA, Inc was purchased by Measurement Specialties in June 2004. Their primary products include pulse oximetry sensors for use in hospitals and other primary/secondary care environments. These non-invasive sensors are used to measure pulse rate and blood oxygen content. Elekon designs and manufactures sensors and optical components on an OEM basis for a variety of customers including Tyco, Philips and GE, among others. | |
Encoder Devices, based in Plainfield, Illinois was purchased by Measurement Specialties in July 2004. Encoder Devices is a designer and manufacturer of rotational sensors (encoders) utilizing magnetic encoding technology. Magnetic encoding is an emerging technology that has many cost and performance advantages over traditional optical encoders. | |
Entran Devices, a New Jersey and Les Clayes-sous-Bois, France based company was purchased by Measurement Specialties in July 2004. Entran is a designer and manufacturer of acceleration, pressure, and force sensors which are primarily sold to the automotive crash test and motorsport racing markets. Their primary products include piezo-resistive accelerometers sold to various customers for use in destructive automotive crash testing, both on crash dummies and on the car. | |
Humirel, SA was acquired by Measurement Specialties in December 2004. Humirel is a Toulouse, France based company that designs and manufactures humidity sensors and assemblies for automotive, heavy truck, HVAC and consumer product markets. The company’s products are used in OEM applications such as automotive windshield defogging, diesel engine performance and emissions management and control, and consumer durable goods for humidity measurement, among others. End customers include several major European, US and Asian automakers, most major diesel engine companies and leading consumer HVAC and durable goods manufacturers. | |
HL Planartechnik GmbH located in Dortmund, Germany was purchased by Measurement Specialties in November 2005. HL Planar has a production and development facility with a Silicon MEMS fab in the heart of Germany’s technology corridor. HL Planar specializes in thin-film metallization processes, producing sensors in four main categories: (1) infrared thermopiles used in appliance, automobile, medical and other applications for non-contacting temperature measurement; (2) magneto-resistive sensors that measure changes in magnetic fields to determine position, angle, rotation or current; (3) mass air flow (MAF) sensors to measure the changes in air flow and other gases for use in automotive, medical and industrial applications; (4) MEMS-based inclination sensors for the precise measurement of level, angle or tilt in construction equipment, automobile and aerospace applications. | |
ATEX Motorsport Sensors Specialists, founded outside Paris, France in 2000 was purchased by Measurement Specialties in January 2006. ATEX specializes in providing vibration sensors to the Formula One racing market. ATEX specializes in specifying aerodynamics, strain gauge, technical design and stress analysis. | |
BetaTHERM Sensors, established in 1983 in Galway, Ireland was purchased by Measurement Specialties in April 2006. BetaTHERM designs and manufactures precision thermistors and customer probes used for temperature sensing in aerospace, biomedical, automotive, industrial and consumer goods applications. | |
YSI Temperature was purchased by Measurement Specialties from YSI Incorporated (Ohio, USA) in April 2006. YSI manufactures thermistors and custom temperature probes and is a leader in the high-precision temperature market, focusing on engineered solutions for medical/healthcare, aerospace and industrial applications. | |

Visyx was purchased by Measurement Specialties in November 2007. Visyx has developed sensors that can measure fluid properties, including density, viscosity and dielectric constant. Visyx fluid property sensors are based on a unique tuning fork technology originally developed by Psychopathologies. This technology will allow OEMs to incorporate fluid property measurement such as oil condition in their next generation equipment. Target markets include heavy on and off road equipment engines and transmissions, compressors/turbines and refrigeration/air conditioning. | |

Eureka Environmental, located in Austin, Texas, USA, was purchased by Measurement Specialties in July 2011. Eureka is a rapidly growing leader in designing, building, selling, and supporting multiparameter instruments for in-situ water analyses. Eureka systems are used on every continent to protect the environmental and economic values of lakes, rivers, aquifers, estuaries, wetlands, and other natural water bodies. |
